"Cast on" game

Cast on: first step in knitting
the process of putting stitches on a knitting needle.

Like a building and education knitting benefits from a good foundation. Care should be taken when you cast your stitches onto your needle. Avoid twisted an loose stitches by cautious cast ons. Practice, practice, practice is the key. Here is a game to help make this practicing fun.

Cast on game
Sit in a circle on chairs or on the floor.
Each participant should have a knitting needle (or two if knitting on method is used) and a ball of yarn.
It is helpful if these balls of yarn are uniquic in colour.
Agree upon a cast on method.

Once you have agreed upon a method of casting on you are ready to proceed.
Each participant starts by making a slip knot or one stitch one their needle. They then pass their needle, as is, to the person on their left. This person then adds one stitch continue in this manner until all have participated. Now pull off all stitches and start over again.

Variations: Start with slip knot or fist stitch. Then pass to your left.
The leader then calls out different cast on techniques. (IE double cast on, knitting on, etc.) This is the cast on technique which must be used. If someone uses the wrong technique or does not use the technique properly they then become the new leader. The group may help in pointing out new leaders.

Tip: At the end of the game, you will know your needle and yarn by the colour of your yarn.
