About our council:
In 1999, Galiano, Pender, Mayne, and Saturna Islands formed the Trincomali Community Arts Council. 'The purpose of the Council is to enhance the cultural and social well being of [these] communities.' - from the Constitution.
Sometimes we work on this goal together (an example: the display case on board the Queen of Cumberland). Sometimes we work on this goal independently (an example Mayne Island's art exhibition to be held tonight).
"You may be perplexed by the word "Trincomali" in the arts council title. When the GICAC directors were casting about for a new name to replace 'Gulf Islands' [Salt Spring Island's art council had taken this name] Trincomali was chosen as the co-ordinate that expressed the unifying force as T channel reaches the shores or or is connected to waters that links the southern Gulf Islands together. The TCAC was incorporated under the societies act on September 13th, 1999. Dwelling further into history the Tincomali was a British naval ship which patrolled this area in the 1850s. The ship itself was named for a northern naval port in Sri Lanca (formerly Ceylon)."
-Carol Christie Smith, president of TCAC
